SMART is an acronym based on the five characteristics of a well-defined goal. SMART goals are often used in business to help employers and employees define their personal work objectives, but the process can be applied to goal-setting in any walk of life.

A well-defined goal should be:

S = Specific

M = Measurable

A = Achievable

R = Realistic

T = Timeline
